Need help with new philips blu ray player

Bought a Philips blu ray player for my girl friend for Christmas set it up in the living room on the hdtv flat screen with an hdmi cable i also bought problem is every single movie we've watched on it while fine in lighted scenes is extremely dark in dark scenes this doesn't happen when I'm watching cable (HD DVR cable box) which is hooked up to the tv using regular av cables so how can i fix this???? or should i just take the blu ray player back to walmart and exchange it??? or take the hdmi cable back???

An HDMI cable is digital, so it either works or it doesn't, more or less.

Check the settings menu for both the TV and Blu-ray player. They should have adjustments for the picture, like brightness and contrast and maybe color temperature. If the dark is too dark, turn up the brightness. If you have a THX DVD with the "THX Optimizer", you can use that to correctly calibrate the brightness and contrast.

It's not the TV as it doesn't do that when I'm watching TV or playing video games just when I'm watching blu rays and the only color setting in the blu ray settings are the black level and I've turned it from light to black and it doesn't change anything also if the HDMI cable isn't working than how am i able to get any picture at all???? As I'm not using the AV cables that came with it just the HDMI cable from the blu ray player to the back of the TV this is very madding as i paid a good 100 bucks for the blu ray player and i'd hate to think i wasted that much money.
