Why are female rock musicians so often the bass player?

Outside of all- or mostly-female groups, I can barely think of any women who play guitar or drums. But I could rattle off a huge number of female bass players in otherwise male bands with ease. Why is that? Are girls led to play bass at a young age?

No clue, but I've always been turned on by female bass players.

There's something really sexy about a chick with a bass.

I dunno but in the 90's it seemed almost like a cliche

I don't know, but it's funny because I was wondering the exact thing myself when looking at some live footage of The Feelies the other day (with Brenda, in the band, of course.) For anyone who's reading, THAT band is long overdue for re-discovery.

You got the wrong guy, mang. I don't come off no banana boat.

Yes, been revisiting them a little after you (I think) mentioned them in my R.E.M. vs Go-Betweens thread. I was only vaguely familiar with their post-Crazy Rhythms output. Only Life is reminding me a little of Felt.
