Make your feature for Deffered pay or Wait for the money?

For independent films, I understand why some people work on features for deffered payment (paid once it gets picked up)like Credit, Reel, Exposure, and basically " Striking when the Iron is Hot ". However, generally do you think its better to finance the film first so everyone gets upfront money from the Crew to the Talent?
In other words, Money Talks and it will make production smoother and it just shows to Cast and Crew that you the Producer/Director has it TOGETHER.

I've worked for Deffered productions, and I just want a point of view from the more Financed productions?

Thoughts?
