Wonder Woman 1984: Is It As Bad As We Remember?

Wonder Woman took cinemas by storm when it was released in 2017. Despite being a period piece set during World War 2, it managed to bring in droves of fans to witness Diana Prince's origin tale. So, with the same creative team returning for a sequel and the ever-popular decade of the 80s being its setting, this could outdo the first in every way. But with expectations comes disappointment as the film released during COVID caused quite a stir for its creative partners and had some rather questionable CGI. So today on DC Revisited, we're getting into it all as we dive into Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 1984.

Wonder Woman is set in World War I.

I did a rewatch and have to say, that most of the scenes in the movie works actually quite good -> much better as I remembered after first watch. But it is such a mess combined together, which makes the movie bad. You can really feel how they came up with the action scenes first and then tried to make them happen. The story arc of Diana and Barbara are both bad, the Maxwell Lord plot is OK, just over the top.

Caught it while on a trip last week & ya, it's pretty bad. Cringe inducing at times.

Yes bad as in one of those rare movies I will never watch twice

reply

No, it's not bad.

It's a good movie, admittedly a step down from it's predecessor, that got brigaded and dragged by the internet. This happens every now and again when the internet comes together and decides to collectively mock a movie.

I remember before the first Wonder Woman came out that there were many misogynistic and anti-semitic posts about it, many were rooting for it to crash and burn but when the critics gave it a resounding thumbs up and the box office figures started rolling in then all of a sudden all the trollish bores crawled back under their rocks... only to resurface two years later when they decided to try ruin Captain Marvel, their attempts so robustly co-ordinated that Rotten Tomatoes had to change their user reviews system. I believe IMDb had to alter their user ratings for it too. During this attack they loved referencing Wonder Woman in a "I'm not racist I have a black friend" manner. They obviously couldn't be misogynistic trolls because they loved Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman 1984 got more mixed review from critics and since it was released peak pandemic as a day and date release on HBO Max it's box office figures were poor and the trolls crawled back out and managed to successfully drag it this time around.

For the record WW84 made more money than The Suicide Squad, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Blue Beetle even though it had much worse circumstances. It's a mystery as to how much it would have made had the pandemic never happend.

Critics wise WW84 has a superior tomatometer than Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. It's just 5% below The Flash and 7% below Aquaman which are two of the more well recieved entries amongst IMDb users and DC fans online.

It's Metacritic score is joint fifth best for the DCEU. It's CinemaScore is joint fifth also (admittedly joint with a lot of the DCEU, a B+ is the most common score for the franchise).

It's an imperfect film, but still fun to watch despite being a mess. The issue is that it's not half as good as the first, and the expectations on it were a lot higher because we've had multiple batman and superman films, there's not the same kind of pressure on films that have been made and remade a bunch of times over decades.
