There's only one thing I didn't undestand...

There's only one thing I didn't undestand during the movie.
At the beginning of the film, Readcliff's character hides out a cylindrical container in his anus before he gets caught.
An hour later on the film (before his scape from prison) another prisoner returns this container or something made from it to him. What did they give each other? What was it for?
