Does it live up to the hype?

I want to see this, but all the theaters near me have it at the most inconvenient times at night or are half an hour away from me. Is this worth going to a late show/driving half an hour or can I wait for it to hit streaming?

reply

For the most part I would say so. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's one of the more original and enjoyable horror movies I've seen in a theater in quite a while.

reply

No. It's average at best and the ending sucks. Not scary at all. People are overrating it because they're so used to horror movies being terrible anything that isn't is automatically great. Wait until it's on Shudder

I enjoyed it until the ending. The ending gets a little too trippy which didn't work for me. It has good performances, excellent set and production design, and it's a cool concept.

Jack sold his soul to the devil and also sacrificed his wife in order to become nr. 1.
He got his wish, and his show became the most viewed one since the moon landing.
The "trippy" bit is Jack in some sort of purgatory, where he realizes what he has done and what forces he was playing with. When he returns to the studio, he is surrounded by dead bodies and the police siren getting closer. It doesn't matter if he killed Lilly and the others ( I believe it was the devil who killed all of them including Lilly). But that's not a very good defense I'm afraid. He will go to prison or a mental institution and his life is ruined.
That's the message of the movie: if you make deals with the dey, your wish might come true, but your life will be destroyed.

reply

Agreed. The final 5-10 minutes ruined what I thought was an okay, but overhyped, movie. The trippy part didn't work for me either because it really didn't flow with the vibe of the rest of the movie.
To be honest it felt more like a stretched out anthology segment than a full movie. But it was alright.

I gave it a 9/10. I think it's worth making an effort for. It's original and darkly funny. The kind of horror worth supporting.

It is actually more fit to watch on your TV at home.

reply

Then that is where I'll watch it!

reply

Not quite. It's good, but not great and is a little overrated. 7/10 would be my rating. Worth watching, but you can watch it on streaming. It is available now on Shudder.
