‘Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Dawns Worldwide With $129M

Looks To Evolve Summer With $130M+ Global Opening – Box Office Preview

The first Planet of the Apes movie under the Disney regime after absorbing Fox hits theaters this weekend with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes poised to do $50M+ domestic, and $130M WW.

Apes plans to pull in the under 35 guy demo in a way that Fall Guy did not. Presales stateside of around $3.1M, in line with what was the 3-day of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning ($54.6M), indicate a $50M-plus debut. That start in U.S./Canada isn’t far from the $56.2M opening of Matt Reeves’ 2017 movie, War of the Planet of the Apes, and that would be considered solid.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is rolling out in 100% of its offshore footprint this week, beginning Wednesday in France, Italy, Germany and Korea. Majors joining on Thursday include the UK, Brazil, Australia and Mexico. China, Spain and Japan follow on Friday.

‘Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Evolving Towards $125M+ Global Debut – International Box Office

As Anthony has reported, domestic is looking at a $52M-$55M start for the full frame. Overseas, we’re eyeing $70M with some potential upside. Hindrance here is China as we noted in our preview. Even though Apes will come in at No. 1 for the frame there, it’s a soft market coming off of a big holiday weekend last session. This one includes a Saturday workday. The Maoyan (9.1) and TPP (9.2) scores are good, but the Douban critical note is not so hot at 6.7 which is the lowest of the recent series. Estimates for the no longer reliable market’s start are around $11M.

Another successful sequel.

I wouldn't say so.

"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" is on a $135m budget, that is its numbers: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl3351937793/?ref_=bo_da_table_4

"Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" is on a $157m budget, but look at this: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl1678869249/?ref_=bo_da_table_19

I would not call it a flop as yet, but it is hardly successful.

There's nothing on BO mojo yet!

Even the deadline estimate is accurate, it is still much lower then the Godzilla movie, and it is hardly something to celebrate about.

Give it time.

Look at the current numbers even internationally it does not perform as well as the Godzilla movie.

SUNDAY UPDATE: 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has dawned to a $129M global debut, swinging in with $72.5M from 52 international box office markets and $56.5M domestically. The worldwide start makes it the 3rd biggest global bow of the year.

Overseas, Latin America was particularly strong including Brazil delivering the biggest opening of 2024. In China, the movie came in No. 1 with $11.4M, but as we noted yesterday (see below), this is currently a soft market after a record-breaking May Day holiday frame.
