My reply is a few months later, but awesome reference.

Ahhh....a Cameron quote! Love it!

You can't fight in here! This is the War Room!

I'm so late to this, but Meryl is never terrible. Even in Into The Woods, which is a quite bad movie and her character is ridiculously implausible, she was great. It's Meryl Streep we're talking about, man!

Oh yes she is, or should I say she has been. Fred Schepisi's film PLENTY was a terrible film and Streep was terrible in it.

I am sick unto death of this pervasive attitude that says that because the woman has a huge acting talent that she is incapable of doing shoddy work.

Oh God. There's nothing more inconvenient than an old queen with a head cold!

reply

Oh my god how can you say Myrel is terrible. I'm so glad the people who allready replied have a mind. Myrel in my oppinion had never made a bad movie ever she is the most talented acctress out there and is good in everything she does

reply

"Myrel" is way too old to play this character. Start there.

I thought she was wonderful.
Plus, she's not really too old for the character. She was in her fifties when she filmed, and could easily pass for a decade younger. If she were an unmarried 25 year old, her parents may very well have disowned her, and if Sophie is in her early twenties, plus the duration of the pregnancy, this would put Meryl's character at about 48-49, which is believable.
Not to mention the fact that this is standard for actors to portray different ages. It's called acting. How many twenty-thirty year olds play teenagers?

and could easily pass for a decade younger.

Maybe to Streep fanboys and fangirls who wouldn't notice her turkey neck, wrinkles and sagging skin.

Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry!

reply

And forty eight and forty nine year olds often have wrinkles and sagging skin. That's actually completely normal.

Two movies I didn't like that she was in A Cry in the Dark (The dingo's got my baby! The dingo's got my baby!) and The Seduction of Joe Tynan. Movies that weren't for me. When I saw The Seduction of Joe Tynan I fell asleep in the theater. Just thought it was boring and thought who cares about an egotistical, narcissistic politician who choose his career over family. Cry was too funny, satirical and it was a drama. Too many people were laughing in the theater, it was kind of sad. Some people got up and left. Meryl wasn't the problem both performances were great, she was just in a bad movie.

reply

Yes thats my point also a movie can be bad but if myrel is in it it makes the movie better.

reply

It's a bit bluntly put, but yes. Who would ever think of that, but even MS can't do anything and still be good at it. She was ridiculously over-acting in this pathetic flop.

I love many of ABBA's songs, but this movie is an insult to any real feeling and insight to be found in them. It's a way too campy and cheesy attempt to capitalize and make some cash from that limited view that ABBA was just cheesy and guilty pleasure singalong.

We can't be lost; we don't know where we're going.
All that matters is that we're going.

reply

... in this pathetic flop.
Boing! You've flopped darling. The film was a huge international success. Meryl was clearly a reason for that success.🐭

reply

That doesn't mean that it's a good movie. And Meryl was pretty terrible, she can't sing very well.

reply

overall i have to agree. so much overacting, not a great film. the stage musical is better and while the songs did fit much of the story, i would have liked to have seen a little more variation on the choices

reply

Agree! Streep's overacting and terrible singing aside, she was WAAAAAAAAY too old for this role. I know a lot of people absolutely LOVE Streep and think that everything she does is amazing. Even a home-video of her farting should get an Oscar according to them.

I love ABBA and their songs but hate this movie mainly because of the over annoying Streep.

Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry!

"Mama Mia" is a terrible movie in every respect, but Streep is the final nail in the coffin. She is so repulsive I started having to turn my eyes away or close them when she was on screen.
