FAR better than Tim Burton crap

Disgusting how the film romanticized the murderer. What's even more disgusting are the idiotic squealing fan girls who went to see the film simply because of Depp.

I just caught this on IFC and everything was far more superior. The acting, the tension, the element of human misery in 18th cent. England.

Ok normally i would have to agree with you however you are puting down not a tim Burton movie but a Stephen Sodhiem MUsical and that is not ok in my book in any way! Stephen Sodheim wrote the musical to scare the crap out of theater goerss in the earily 80's. it is meant to be over the top and melodramtic that is the point. While Tim Burton's choices were odd they fit they way the Muscal should have been when put on screen its a dark eery tale that is not like anything on the stage at the time.
and how did it Romanticize murder? please explain that to me?
i found that because i know Sondheim's musical and back story better i like that much more apealing than this version. it digs at core feeling for family and what happen when those are strip and what it could drive a man to.
but however yes i must confess i have a friend who knows of the musical did go for the benifit of Johnny Depp. I however found that the change in non professional singers for this movie made it silighty more realistic and hey it brought people who dont know the musical and who say they don't like them to the movie more money and exposed them to a new artform! but i was squealing just to see a Musical once again put on screen.

Sorry have to disagree with you, Sondheim did not write the Burton script, he wrote the music and created a musical out of a very good play by CG Bond which Sondheim saw in the early 70's at Stratford East, London.

This version with Ray Winstone isn't as good as the musical or its original play by Bond as it does not have the revenge gone wrong plot device and you do not have much motive for Mrs Lovett etc so in effect it is much closer to the original story in the penny dreadful and lacks a certain drive.

And I completely agree it is FAR better than the one starring Johnny Depp, but will have to admit I don't like musicals of any kind.

Thanks for your post.

" musicals of any kind."

More fool you. Musicals remain popular today because there are just some things that are best expressed in song. And a desire to cut the throats of anyone that has wronged you is certainly one.

You should have seen the ending to the Sondheim's Stage musical. Much creepier than the ending in Tim Burton's movie.
