From the article:

"Upon its release, The Lost World was praised for its top-of-the-line CG effects but was panned for its writing and characters. In the years since, the film's reputation has worsened, with many criticizing the darker tone and lack of wonder present in the first film."

That's totally right. There is no sense of wonder in TLW and the tone of the film is too dark and foreboding. JP worked at least in part because it was like part-thriller, part-nature documentary about dinos.

JP is a joy to watch. It's elevating. TLW is not a joy, it's a drag.

The script sucked and Goldblum can't anchor a movie on his own. It's nice of the director to take the failure on his own shoulders, but he did his job fine.

It grossed $619 million ($1.207 billion in today's money) and was the second highest-grossing film of 1997. How exactly was it not a hit?

reply

It was certainly a financial hit but it's not a movie that really garnered the love of the people. Most people I talk to about it don't like it. This is in contrast to its predecessor, which was is almost universally loved and regarded as a classic.

The film was a massive success and its reputation has only improved over the years.

You can’t top Jurassic Park and Spielberg wisely didn’t try to, he went the tried and trusted route of the darker sequel.

He also wisely kept the T-Rex and raptors as the main stars, all these new super-dinos that change colour and can outsmart radar are utter bollocks. Only the Spielberg JP’s feel real and frightening.

Nah, Lost World is awesome. I wish we had films a fraction as good in cinemas these days.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park was a hit and it's a masterpiece like the first movie.
