Just watched this film in 4K resolution, and it becomes glaringly apparent that John McClaine is consistently sporting eyeliner throughout the entire movie. It's something I had never noticed before.

Ordinarily, this wouldn't be a problem. I mean, male actors sometimes enhance their appearance with eyeliner (like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean).

However, once you catch sight of it, it becomes remarkably distracting, and believe me, it becomes the sole focal point of your attention.

I wonder what he, and McTiernan, was thinking with this.

i believe i read at some point that Sam Jackson was utilizing eyeliner during the filming of this movie and advised Willis on the benefits of it making one's eyes "pop" during emotional scenes and especially closeups where an actor is yelling or talking on payphones

I don't know why, but your reply made me chuckle.

Who knows why Willis decided to use eyeliner in this film. Vanity? Maybe. Tip from Sam Jackson? Perhaps.

It's amusing to think that with the advent of 4K, we might discover that all action heroes from the 90s utilized girly makeup to enhance their eyes. To be continued...
