Shouldnt this case had been transferred to the FBI dept???

Detectives taking on drug mafia diplomat from South Africa? Come On! That;s an FBI case! Also the movie really proved to be an Hollywood action fantasy! Goons break in Murtaugh's house and ducttape him and his wife, did Rigg's NOT think they knew where he lived too? He takes Rika to his house and brings her to her house after the date leaving her there alone even though there is a VERY HIGH possibility the goons were following them around! Especially after Riggs stalks after the Diplomat and even shoot the fish aquarium! Can't forget about the cops who were killed! Did not all really think none of those powerful people was coming after them? The police dept didnt get any of the officers extra protection so one dies from a bomb at her pool, another during working out and 5 more in a house bombing during a poker game! Wtf???

To “the FBI department”? I alwas thought the Federal BUREAU of Investigation was a free-standing entity, not a department.

looking from above (gov level) rather than below (PD level) you could easily say the FBI is a department , REGARDLESS of what it says in their headed notepaper.

Riggs and Murtaugh took nailing these guys personally. But to answer your question. Most likely, yes, the higher ups would probably have requested assistance from the State Department or the FBI.
