The ending sucked?

I can't remember this film very well, I saw it a few times in the 80's but haven't seen it since. I seem to recall it being good but I didn't like the ending. It was just a big dumb over the top fight in the guys garden where nobody goes down, like a cross between Rocky and Misery.

I would like to watch it again but the thought of the ending puts me off.

The premise of the fight scene was kinda... Off... A bunch of cops standing around watching as one of their own fight a guy who is clearly dangerous.

But the fight in it self was actually very good. They used alot of moves from martial arts that hadn't really been seen in movies before. Like capoeira and brazilian jui jitzu.

Cool

Yeah, I agree. The premise for the fight and the weird cops-standing-around-watching bit was kind of meh.
But the fight itself was really good, and felt very "real".

The fight was awesome.

The fight in fire hydrant water.

Personally i always liked the ending fight scene but i'm curious, would you (or anyone else reading this board) prefer the ending that Shane Black wrote in his first version of the script? From Trivia;

Shane Black's first draft of Lethal Weapon (1987) which he wrote sometime in 1985 was very different, not just from his later drafts but also from the final movie. This first draft was 141 pages long and it was much darker, it had alternate plot parts, character scenes, action sequences and many other differences, like entire ending which had big chase scene including helicopters and a trailer truck full of cocaine which explodes over Hollywood Hills causing for cocaine to start snowing over Hollywood sign. Riggs was also much different character in this first draft than he is in the movie. Black at first thought that this draft (which was one of his first scripts) sucks so he threw it in the garbage but later changed his mind and re-worked it into the new drafts. For the longest time, Black was the only one who had copy of his first draft until he sold it on auction. This draft still remains some of his most wanted work amongst fans.

the thing that got me was not the fight but when Riggs brought Murtaugh the bullet because he no longer needed it and Murtaugh invited him to dinner...that right there killed what made the movie which was Riggs being suicidal but they started to become friends well that was it..any sequel becomes a standard buddy cop movie without any edge which is what happened although LW2 did contain a bit of what mad LW1 good but 3& 4 were just Ugghh
