Spolier alert. A day of non-violence. I have a question on this.

There is a part of the movie towards the end where Gandhi is depicted as undertaking a fast unto death. It is the same one in which a man walks up to the landing and throws a piece of bread at Gandhi commanding him to eat. Gandhi refuses... Anyway, Gandhi is wanting an absence of physical violence across India. In the movie, it takes place. Gandhi's followers tell him that a day has passed without any physically violent incidents. Gandhi then asks them for a glass of orange juice.....

My question: did any of this take place?

Did Gandhi commit to such a fast? Did the entire population of India respond, thus allowing Gandhi to end his fast and live? If so, when did it happen? In the movie, it is around the time that the British have decided to leave India so... around 1947. Any details about whether this did or did not take place would be most appreciated.

If it is not too much to ask, references to (any of) the events depicted would be highly highly appreciated and valued. I have not researched it myself. I may well do so; I thought I would start here as it was in this movie that I came across it. Thank-you in advance for any assistance which is provided.

Best regards,
Tom Livanos.
