What the hell is with his hair and that weird ponytail mohawk thing? about an hour in... I am not conversant enough in history or Indian religions to have my own thoughts on this. Can anyone help?

I think he began going bald at a relatively young age, early thirties. I don't remember any "mohawk thing, but I do think he had a ponytail at one point in the movie. Once he began balding, typical male pattern baldness with the top of his pate losing all the hair, he cropped the rest of his hair short. Then sometime between WWI and WWII he began shaving his head.
That's all that I know about. I'm curious about his evolution over time, too.
