Wow, goodie bags in 1979?

Having a kid born in 1999, I thought this was a much more recent phenomenon that this. Presents for the guests at a birthday party? Who came up with that brilliant idea?

I don't remember this being around in the 70s at all, but obviously it was. Then again, I was a teenager when this movie came out, long past birthday parties.

I was born in 1975, and I ALWAYS gave out a goodie bag at my birthday parties.

I nearly always received one too, from others' parties then.
If anything, that custom was more common back then.

They're not gifts, they're just a little treat or two to take home.

Where is the scene in this movie where kids get goodie bags at a birthday party? I don't remember that and I've seen this movie a bunch of times.

When he's late picking up the kid from a birthday party. The kid is pissed, and the mom says something like, "Don't forget your goodie bag."

We had them back then, usually something like candy and a few superballs, squirtguns or a stash of army men. You could kind of a gage how "cool" a kid was if they gave out a decent bag at the end.

That was a solid scene, too. Billy is just p**sed after see all the other "mothers" leave and Ted is just trying to balance keeping his temper and not blowing up at him because he was out making a living.

______________
Yes, Ted was working and had no choice. What you have said, is like shades of Joanna, who didn't seem to appreciate what Ted was doing either. However, Billy was just a kid and for him, he would have felt he was missing out and even embarrassed, because it was the mothers that were picking up the other kids and his wasn't around. Ted making a living, would have been far away from his mind. It was understandable how Billy felt and I think Ted would have understood this. I don't think he would have wanted to blow up at Billy over this and may have felt more annoyance at himself, because he couldn't get away earlier.

I remember going to a party in 1969 and every kid getting a goodie bag.

I was born in 1965 and always remembered goody bags at parties. It was also common when my nephews and nieces were growing up

Goody bags have been a thing for a long time, but the contents have improved. Back then they were filled with junk candy and cheap toys (lollipops, tootsie rolls, puzzle game or bubbles.). Also this kid lives in a wealthy neighborhood in NYC where people try to impress each other and out do each other’s parties.
