They likely believe that BC & SK don't have pistols or are scared. Most people with pistols in that situation back then would use them, not politely ask the thieves to leave. The thieves must have taken it as a sign of weakness.

'Por favor' means please. Someone asking politely wouldn't be thought to have weapons. The bandits found that they were wrong, to their misfortune.
