Needs to be restored for Blu-Ray

MGM made two feature films in 3-strip Cinerama: this, and How the West Was Won. The latter has been restored for HD video, and it looks and sounds the best it had in a long time. Unfortunately, the Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm remains only on some grainy old film print mastered to standard-definition letterbox video with tinny mono sound. It is so damaged and neglected I cannot bear to watch it. Its screen division lines are still visible, unlike the restored West, whose lines are almost unnoticeable. Those distracting lines must be the hardest flaw to correct, but they were corrected successfully in West. Why can't both of these movies be restored so wonderfully? They are both treasures from MGM's vault. Grimm deserves the same high-quality picture and sound restoration that West has enjoyed.

I would love to see public demand pick up for this classic. I remember loving Buddy Hackett's story.

They have also released three Cinerama presentations, THIS IS CINERAMA, CINERAMA HOLIDAY & SOUTH SEAS ADVENTURE, all resorted and on DVD and blu-ray.

WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM will get its due. When, however, is the question.

They just played it on TCM the other day. First time I've seen it on a big-screen TV and WOW it looks awful. There's one shot that's meant to be somewhat disorienting as the camera glides through a room of dancers, but it's downright nauseating as they warp through the folds of the three screens. There's noticeably different tint to each of the negatives too, which is distracting. I readily admit that HD has spoiled me, but this movie really looks like crap - and these days most of the film's various Cinerama issues could be digitally corrected, so there's no excuse for this old print to still be in circulation.
