Was anyone else annoyed by Mrs Mullin ?

I was.I hated how she tried to come between Julie and Billy.

She's meant to be annoying. She's also that way in "Liliom", the non-musical Hungarian play that "Carousel" is based on, only there her name is Mrs. Muskat.

I played Mrs. Mullin onstage, and I did not like her character at first, but then (as all actors must do) I learned to understand her better, and by the end of our run she and Jigger were my favorites. She added tension and variety to the show. Not to mention I started to feel sorry for her.

Tough and brassy...but also very alone. Julie allows her to have a final moment with Billy after his death.

Exactly. That was a really interesting scene to do. We had Nettie and Julie stand on one side of the stage, with the chorus on the other, and Mrs. Mullin and Billy in the middle. When I (Mrs. Mullin) was done pushing Billy's hair back from his forehead, I backed up and stood alone centerstage, looking slowly from one side to the other for a moment, as they all glared silently at me. Then I ran offstage.

Everyone said I looked very alone. :) But it was fun.

Mrs. Mullin doesn't get any songs, but she's a very memorable character, and landing the role was a plum for you.

Was it a high school production?

Hey moviefreak, I played carrie in a comm theatre production. This has always been my favorite play. I saw a revival as a teen in lincoln center in the 60s. It was the first professional production I ever saw and since then I wanted to play the part of carrie. I had a blast. My best friend played mrs mullin.

Really? That's awesome! I didn't know anything about the show until our board announced we were doing it. We all watched the movie together before starting rehearsals.

And yeah, it was a high school production. Pretty low key, but a lot of people come to see our shows, so we had a good turnout at each performance.

Yeah I wasn't too thrilled about her either. She didn't even like Julie in the beginning when Billy was flirting with Julie. Was Mrs. Mullins jealous deep down that Billy wasn't flirting with her?

reply

I think he'd been her toyboy.
