My least favourite Hitchcock film, but I still liked it

I've seen a total of 20 Hitchcock films so far and I've given them 8 and 9 star ratings, excluding Vertigo which has a 10 rating from me and while this is the first Hitchcock film I've seen that I've rated a 7, I still enjoyed it. I liked the characters (especially Shirley MacLaine), I liked the funny moments, I liked the score by Bernard Hermann, I liked the light-hearted nature of the film, but I especially love the scenery and cinematography of this film, which was actually quite striking in a few places. Vermont looks stunning! So overall, apart from the cinematography and visuals, there was nothing really great about this film for me, but it was enjoyable enough for me to give it a 7/10.

Agreed! This is one of my least favorite of his films, but despite that, i kinda like it.

Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

agreed, its sort of a pleasant watch i hadn't seen it since i was a kid, i used to watch it as a tradition once every year, the setting is very stark, comedy though has a way of often aging terribly but it ends on a joke that stands as pretty funny as they are hiding in the bushes and the leading guy says "beat it you little creep. i mean, hurry home son." comes as a surprise, kind of reminded of a chevy chase style bit, but the scenery and music score is kind of what stands out really about this movie and what you take away from it, otherwise i think its quite different from other hitchcock flicks, it aired in the afternoon here while all other hitchcock movies airs at night. by the way, what was up with the time comments though? "if only i was two years younger...", two? "seven years, i'll be an old man". seven? and the way he changed the painting while the deputy was there went really fast.

drifting in space,
in morning like the sun came madeleine,
as im spinnin around,
best place in the galaxy for this guy,
autumn chill cant feel, grey sky cant see,
filling out a dress through morning blowin my mind,
when madeleine leaves my world dies.

I agree with your rating of 7/10. I reckon it's the best music Bernard Herrmann ever did. Little comic and mysterioso effects amid the more familiar Herrmann style. The only thing is I found it is a one-joke movie which nearly outstays it's welcome by the end.

Vermont does look stunning. But a storm took all those love Autumn leaves off the trees after filming started. So Hitchcock had all the leaves swept up and taken back to the studios in California. They were then pasted on some of the trees there and sprayed a more richer Autumn coloring. So the stunning quality of the scenery is enhanced in a fake way at times.
