Dorothy Vs. Ruth

I don't understand the frequent references to Dorothy McGuire's character being plain, with Ruth's character set up as the stunning rival. They are both nice looking women, certainly they have a different appearance, but I don't Ruth is markedly more attractive.

Maybe a man would feel differently? I don't know. I think Dorothy is pretty and it's easy to see why Van would be attracted to her.
