...wasn't Jamel's shortsword actually a long-bladed janbiya dagger, rather than a katar? If there are any armchair antiquarians, out there, who could seriously reply, pro or con, I would deeply appreciate it.

The katar is a push dagger, typically with a straight blade. Some have a slight waviness to the blade. And some have a slight curve that makes them suitable for slashing attacks. So I think they may be right in calling it a katar. I would think that the film's research dept. and writers would not make such a mistake.
