Stars in French Film as King Louis XV

We'll hear him speak French. His accent is very good, but unfortunately he's not fluent in real life.

The film is about the king's scandalous relationship with his mistress. "Jeanne du Barry" will be opening the Cannes Film Festival. Trailer:

Depp used to choose interesting roles before he changed and appeared to go for the money. Maybe he returned to his roots?

BTW, rumor has it that Depp was often late and butt heads with the director. You'd think he'd be grateful for the role.

It’s opening in Cannes. Let’s see where it goes. Maybe it could be an Oscar contender.

If Depp is nominated for an Oscar and wins he better get the mother of all the applauses.

If Will Smith got an applause after publicly assaulting a someone, Depp should get an even bigger one after proving his innocence.

In theaters in France. Only on Netflix in the U.S.. starting on May 16th. Very disappointing. Call me old school, but I believe theatrical films should first be shown in a movie theater.

Controversy aside, Smith's role called for a more emotional performance as a runaway slave unlike Depp's role which appears much more subdued (in the trailer, anyway) and maybe lasts only 15 minutes. The director did say Depp's facial expressions were interesting so we'll see.

I just read he is being blacklisted by Hollywood.

Smith won the Oscar for King Richard.

Emancipation came out last year, so it won’t be competing with Depp’s movie.

Well, well, well, it seems that most of Depp's comeback role has been left on the cutting room floor!

I used to be such a fan of his, but this is it. If he can't be arsed to be behave professionally on the set of his fucking comeback role, he's over.

reply

Same here. I used to respect him because he chose movie roles for their artistic worth. Then, he changed and chose anything just for the money to support his habit and excessive lifestyle.

reply

I also used to respect him because he did such a great job with every role he took, or almost every role! He used to have great range, he'd play heroes and antiheroes and villains, and modern Americans and cartoonish comedy and British libertines from centuries ago, and while he didn't succeed at everything he tried, he had a very high rate of success. That was back in the day, the 1990s and early 2000s, when he worked hard and did his research, and almost everything he did was worth watching. But well, over the last 10-15 years he's gotten lazier, slacker, and drunker, he relied more and more on extreme makeup, and his performances became awful. Just painful to watch.

And he got drunk and greedy, and well. He had the chance to do what Robert Downey Jr. did, turn his life around and come back as an actor... and this is how it's working out.

Totally agree. I would watch a movie only because he was in it without knowing the plot. I knew he would give an interesting performance even if the movie itself was mediocre. Now, I've given up on him even though I'll likely watch the Jeanne Le Barry film since I find the subject interesting.

I haven't given up on Leonardo DiCaprio and Kathy Bates yet.
