Sofa Price Checking

Hi Chaps. I'm interested in buying this sofa:-
https://www.dfs.co.uk/reynolds-velvet/rys13aeae

I was looking at it a few months ago but put off as we had just acquired a new cat (kitten) and didn't want it ripped to shreds.

The cat seems to be okay with furniture though, so I thought it was time to bite the bullet.

However, it seems like they've really knocked the price up on this. I'm sure it was around the £800 / £900 mark when I was looking at it before. Can anyone advise if there's a website where I can put the URL in and see what it was a different dates?

Thanks 🙏

reply

I don't have a URL but would like to say that's a nice shade of blue.

reply

Yeah, I like that blue or maybe teal.

But I don't want to get it now if it's one of those time period when they put them at full price, so for the other nine months of the year they can advertise it as 40% or whatever off!

reply

As an aside, having bought several items from them over the years, I know that they have regular ‘Sales’, so it might be worth waiting for the Summer/Autumn/Winter/New Year sale.

Also, they do some great Interest Free payment schemes.

Anyway, good luck in your endeavours!

reply

Thanks 👍

Yeah, they were doing it interest free over three years. Great deal really but sadly looks like I'll have to wait for now!

reply

I can also vouch for the quality.

When I was first married, we bought a 3 seater and 2 seater set for our old house 22 years ago. When I bought Kings Towers it came with us and it’s now in the King Cave where my Music Vault is housed. It still looks brand new.

reply

That's good to know.

We tried quite a few places earlier in the year and although I only really know them for always seemingly having sales on (although annoyingly not just now!!) the sofas actually seemed pretty decent and firm. Ikea's ones were absolute garbage by comparison!

reply

IKEA is only good for student buy-to-let’s, lol.

This is the way sofas and Pizzas are sold in the UK ,
Its a really weird marketing strategy employed by only those two vendors.

Sky high prices + sales / deals / vouchers / discounts .
Its incredibly annoying i would imagine , i'm not a regular purchaser of either .

Maybe just haggle with 'em.
"Look it was £800 before , and we both know it will be again in the future , so just it me now for that price!

Ha! Yeah, I was thinking about that - might try it in their live chat and see if they come good...

You're right about pizzas as well. Always seeing these daft deals. But then, I haven't been able to buy takeaway pizza in years. Ever since I was in Australia and came back to realise they were at least ~ 50% more expensive here! Just never been able to take being ripped off on dough with a little bit of topping ever since!

You can try the Wayback machine...

Hey, thanks!

They had it:-

It was £799!! £400 less. Looks like I'm waiting until the next sale...

reply

You're welcome, that site sure does come in handy sometimes!

reply

I'm saddened that something as awseome as the wayback machine wouldbe wasting their magicly massive storage space recording the scammy marketing ploys of shiester sofa companies.

My only input is that real value in furniture is buying quality.

In the northeast U.S., there's a furniture chain that had great prices, but of course the advertised pieces were the off-shore crap. My wife and I walked into this chain and I told the saleslady we were there for a sofa and loveseat. She pointed to a special they had and I stopped her and asked her where the "good" stuff was.

We ended up with a Lane (U.S.) set and about 25 years later and raising two kids, it's still like new, and we never covered either piece.

If you intend to keep the furniture a long time and it's going to get a lot of use, it's cheaper to pay more and buy good stuff. Is there domestically produced furniture in the U.K.?

reply

Totally agree - pay more for better stuff.

And get those firm cushions that don't wear easily.

Yesterday I paid $3.35 for a 500ml/16oz bottle of Diet Coke at a 7-Eleven. The Soda fountain machine was broken where a 32oz is iirc $1.99.

reply

He said sofa not soda 🤣👍

reply

My point was everything is fonsistently getting more ducking expensive. :D :(

reply

This is funnier than samoanjoes’ puns.

reply

I'm not sure how to take that, as I always thought puns were supposed to produce a mild "heh" to appreciate their cleverness. e.g. "Chess nuts boasting in an open foyer."

reply

It was meant as a compliment 👍

reply

I know, and sincerely appreciate that; I just didn't want to steal SJ's thunder. :D
