Snow movies in 1980

Interesting that The Shining, Superman II, and Empire Strikes Back all were released in the year 1980, and all of them feature snowy locations as a prominent part of their respective films. Did Hollywood have some interest in snow at that time?

I think in the late 70s the thing is that scientists thought we were headed for a new ice age, instead of global warming. Probably not related but it is interesting.

Exactly!

That's why I tend to make the corresponding comparisons:
'Superman: The Move' (1978) Global Cooling
'The Man of Steel' (2013) Global Warming, err "Climate Change"

I had snow idea 🤷‍♂️

Good observation. I seem to like "snow movies" to relate. "The Red Tent" with Sean Connery was in the 70s, but I don't remember it being very good, but I liked some of the lines.

All the cocaine the producers and directors were doing gave them some ideas.

😆

Don't forget "Christmas Evil".

I have no idea, but I have to laugh when I see most snow scenes. It's quite obvious that Hollywood has no clue how real snow looks or "works." Too often it's quite obvious they used spray-on snow on the trees, houses, fences, etc.

Off the top of my head, one movie that had real snow was Grumpy Old Men, and even then, it was obvious that they moved snow around to make some scenes look snowier than they were. But I understand that it's tough to work with real snow. However, I do sometimes laugh at snow scenes where actors are out in the "snow" but you don't see their breath, as you would in cold climates.

I appreciate the British shows I've watched that have a little snow on the ground in the afternoon/evening, and the next day the snow is gone. That's how it works in areas that don't get all that much snow.
