Does anyone else find it weird when songs fade out at the end?

As a rocker, it's more rare for songs to fade out but, like, just finish the song like a normal person. Musicians aren't going to start singing lower and lower when they perform it live, so give it a proper ending in the studio.

I fully expect this thread to be parodied, but I'm being serious.

I prefer an ending to be telegraphed in advance rather than a sudden end.

reply

I guess I'm used to it, but it would be nice for some songs like All Along the Watchtower or Fade to Black or Mister Crowley that have some kick ass guitar going during the fadeout to keep going at full volume instead.

reply

Rock music should just end with a huge bang.

reply

I won't argue with that.

reply

How about songs that fade in? Like "Over My Head" from Fleetwood Mac.

reply

That's extremely rare. At least that's in the beginning. When it's at the end it sounds like they weren't sure how to end it.

reply

'My Young Bride' by Midlake.

reply

I do love that song so much. I think the fade in adds to the haunting atmosphere.

Boston - More Than A Feeling

reply

I prefer songs to fade because I'm not the biggest fan of abrupt endings of songs.

reply

Is it really abrupt? Most of the songs you're pretty much aware the ending is comping if it's composed well enough.

I prefer songs to fade because I'm not the biggest fan of abrupt endings of songs.

If it's a stylistic choice that doesn't suit the rest of the song, then I'm not for it. But if it fits the almost "story" that the song is telling, then I don't mind it.

reply

The song below this reply sounds like a stylistic choice. It works nice.

reply

It's not a stylistic choice that doesn't suit the rest of the song though. It is a nice choice, but I could've guessed it would end with a fad-eout from the first few seconds in, coz it fits the song.

reply

Depends on the song.

The fadeout on this song, The World Spins by Julee Cruise is perfect.

reply

Yeah, that works. Although that doesn't sound like they were unsure how to end it. It actually fit the tone of the song and they could probably perform it that exact same way live.

reply

No, I like the fact that there are many ways for a some to end.

reply

Really? As a live music guy, I thought you would be against this because it can't really be done live.

reply

I have seen a band do it live (I think it was 10cc).

reply

I don't believe for a second that you saw 10cc live. I am 100% certain that you have never mentioned them on this site ever.

reply

One of my favourite bands; I have all their albums and have seen them many times.

I think I mentioned them once in conjunction with one of the Guardians of the Galaxy’s Soundtracks.

reply

I was joking. I know they're one of your favourites. Personally they're too soft for my liking.

reply

You know I love Yacht Rock.

reply

I like when my cc's go up to 11.
