Opera North's 2016 performance of Wagner's Ring Cycle on BBC iplayer

I watched Das Rheingold earlier - not bad. I confess to enjoying the orchestral passages more than the singing! Sometimes I feel the characters would be as well just saying their lines. Is that sacrilege?!

I did enjoy a couple of performances though - Alberich (Jo Pohlheim) and, particularly, Loge (Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke).

I listened to some of it when it was listenable via the Radio One site, and it was literally the best Ring I've ever heard. They took it down before I got to listen to more than Das Rheingold, though.

I wish I could listen to the whole thing, or watch the video, but BBC iPlayer videos are only viewable in the UK.

You could try using a virtual private network.

Legally dubious though!

BBC got hip to those a while ago and blocks them somehow. (You can Google that -- a lot of expats, travelers, and Brits stationed abroad bemoan the fact that their VPN attempts to view the iPlayer no longer work.)

Ah, OK. Pity!

I didn't watch the whole thing - I found the double exposures and split screen an irritating barrier to the performances, and found it a little dull when we first got to meet Wotan etc. but I did hear it from the other room and it sounded bloody good. I popped back a bit later and was knocked out by Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke as Loge. He was totally "in" the role. Consummate singing and performing - especially in a production that really needed that sort of commitment - I regretted not staying in front of the box just to see him in action. His final cackle wasn't half spine tingling too, counterpointing the start of the luscious orchestral coda.
