Is this normal? - pain in legs

This isn't an urgent health problem, just something I've occasionally experienced since I was a teenager and was curious about what it is and what causes it. Every so often when I move my leg in a certain way or if I kind of ' tense ' my leg - deliberately or accidentally - I get this really bad kind of ' spasming ' pain that goes through my whole leg and is incredibly painful, lasting about thirty seconds to a minute. It can happen in either leg but just that body part - has anyone else experienced this?
