Why do old printed pictures look so horrific?

Maybe this is not the forum to ask this, but I want to know why do magazines printed in the 60's and 70's look so ugly, and I'm not talking about the yellowing that comes from age, but the actual printing is so ugly and has a burnt quality to it, and that is not what the pictures were like. For instance this is the printed photograph: http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/guynlgbch/media/US%20Vogue%200575/01PhotoHelmutNewtonModelsLisaTaylorUnknownsHairMakeupRickGillette.jpg.html

and this would be a digital file from the negative: https://40.media.tumblr.com/cb62aa03012fe218111c7c2ba0ff99c6/tumblr_o137gjQ6xB1ryxb20o1_540.jpg

Does anyone know?

But current magazines look really good? For instance Vogue magazine, looks very much like digital files.

digital as in the image on a screen or you mean digital printing?

So in digital printing there isn't that moiré effect of offset printing?
