What was so bad about the Empire?

I suppose living under the Empire is about the same as living in North Korea.

The whole "blowing up planets" thing might have been a contributing factor.

Like USA dropping bombs over the world?

You were fine so long as you were a white Corellian. Everyone else (ie non-human aliens) had to suffer slavery or being ejected from their home planet because the Empire wanted to mine the fvk out of it.
