Sandbox question

Hi,

I got this game mainly for the sandbox mode and I've finally unlocked it. I plan on starting tonight but can someone tell me if all stuff is already unlocked, or do I have to still research to unlock rooms, upgrades etc? I've only gotten far enough to unlock the sandbox option.
