Why so few Westerns set in California?

California had one of the wildest histories of the wild west era. Thanks to the Gold Rush there were lots of murders, gunfights and crime. There were numerous bloody genocidal Indian wars there. From what I have been reading, California was even wilder than Texas. However almost nobody knows about this and there have been only a handful of Westerns set in California. I wonder why?
