What does it mean when a movie is "soulless"?

I just watched The Super Mario Brothers movie and thought, "it's an entertaining movie, but soulless." It felt appropriate to the franchise but it didn't feel like it was made by someone who loved the franchise. But, I can't really pin down *why* I think so.

What makes a movie soulful, and what makes a movie soulless? Another example I can think of is, Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom and Rushmore are soulful, while Grand Budapest Hotel and The French Dispatch are soulless.
